Deadwood, one of America’s most storied Western boomtowns, was founded in 1876 on the northern edge of South Dakota’s Black Hills.
The Black Hills, once part of the Great Sioux Reservation, are along South Dakota’s western border, and a small part of the mountain range extends into Wyoming. Other landmarks in the area include Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Badlands National Park and Devils Tower National Monument. Rapid City, with a population of about 70,000, is approximately 45 miles southeast of Deadwood. The largest major city is Denver, roughly 390 miles to the southwest.
